Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Treatment is most effective when started at the first tingling sensation — before a blister forms. Through the Wales Common Ailments Service, we can supply antiviral cream free of charge.
Symptoms:
- A tingling, itching or burning sensation around the lips — the early warning sign
- A cluster of small, fluid-filled blisters on or around the lip
- Blisters that burst, crust over and heal within 7–10 days
Treatment at Knights Pharmacy:
We supply aciclovir 5% cream or penciclovir cream. Start at the tingling stage for best results. We'll also advise on preventing spread to others.
